SUMMARY:Wine Australia - Orange: Wines with Altitude webinar
DESCRIPTION:Sitting from 600m to over 1000m above sea level\, the Orange wine region in New South Wales is Australia’s highest vineyard area\, giving it a cool climate year-round with cold\, snowy winters. \nLocated about three hours west of Sydney\, Orange is dominated by the now extinct volcano Mount Canabolas\, which provides a unique combination of geology and soils. \nUntil the 1980s\, this cool climate region lay dormant. Vines had been planted a hundred years earlier\, but things were slow to take off – until one high-profile winemaker lit the spark and the wine scene exploded. The region is now home to more than 60 wineries\, top winemaking talent and world-class wines. \nHear from winemakers Damian Shaw (Philip Shaw Wines)\, Peter Robson (Ross Hill Wines) and Ben Crossing (Angullong Wines) and find out why Orange is the new black in the world of Australian wine. The winemakers will take you round this cool climate hotspot and they’ll reveal why it’s such an exciting time for the region. \nIn a conversation with Bert Blaize\, New South Wales Wine Ambassador in the UK\, the winemakers will discuss how the near-perfect balance of elevation and sunshine results in fresh\, vibrant wines. The producers will introduce you to the region’s signature styles and they’ll also share some of the challenges that come with making wine at altitude. \nThis webinar is free and open to all. You’re welcome to share details with colleagues and wine friends. \nFor more information and to register\, please visit https://conversations.australianwine.com/wine-australia/Orange-Wines-with-Altitude \n

SUMMARY:Wines of South Africa - Independent intuition press tasting
DESCRIPTION:The independent sector is an important one for South Africa. In The Wine Merchant 2021 reader survey South Africa topped the list of countries that are expected to see sales growth and was named fourth in the areas that independent retailers specialized in. \nIntuition in UK independent retailers has helped to build a strong and vibrant sector with South Africa at the forefront and it’s encouraging to see so many businesses investing in the category. \nThis tasting will highlight some of the wines that UK independent merchants have chosen as their hero wines from South Africa and give some insights into what South African wines offer their customers and businesses. \nAlongside the wines on show will be a tasting booklet with valuable comments from key players in the UK independent retail sector. \nIf you would like to register to attend this tasting please email jo@winesofsa.com

SUMMARY:CWW - Let's talk about Not-so-Sauvignon Sauvignon blancs
DESCRIPTION:For the first of the Circle’s March webinars\, we’re delighted to welcome Matt Day\, winemaker from South Africa’s oldest-established wine estate\, Klein Constantia\, who will reveal all about the somewhat enigmatic title of his presentation. \nMatt’s main aim will be to highlight how Sauvignon Blanc\, when well made\, is truly one of the noble wine grapes. Let him explain: ‘I will chat about the old and the new and how times are changing and the trends that people are following. And hopefully by the end I will have confused everyone enough to think that Sauvignon blanc is actually something to be taken seriously and isn’t just a tooty-fruity cultivar’. \nHe will also discuss the uniqueness of South Africa’s icon sweet wine Vin de Constance\, with a focus on the future rather than the past. \nDo join us on the 4th.

SUMMARY:Let's talk about Burgundy 2020 (+2021)
DESCRIPTION:This year’s round of new vintage Burgundy face-to-face tastings in London has been much reduced by the current level of Covid-19 infections and restrictions\, so for the second Circle event of 2022 we’re stepping in to fill some of the information gap for members in the UK and beyond. \nJoin Jack Chapman\, head of private client sales at respected London wine merchant Lea & Sandeman\, for an expert overview of the acclaimed 2020 vintage. Jack has spent his entire professional career in the wine trade\, working across sales\, buying\, auctioneering and retail\, while running a small hobby vineyard as a sideline. He joined L&S at the start of the pandemic\, and has been fortunate enough to escape to Burgundy for both the ’19s and ’20s.

SUMMARY:Let's talk about Virginia Wines - 2022 and beyond
DESCRIPTION:Join Virginia specialist and Frank Morgan wine writer to discuss the virtues of Virginia wine\, where their industry is today and where it’s going tomorrow. Virginia is close to the hearts of many Circle members\, following successful trips there. This will be a valuable update as well as a fine introduction for those unfamiliar with the subject. Though Virginia has a long history with the grape dating back to Acte 12 of 1619 requiring all colonists to plant and tend grapevines\, the state’s wine industry began in earnest four decades ago. In that time\, Virginia has emerged as one of the most important regions in the US. In this webinar\, Frank will cover the state’s geological and grape diversity.
