SUMMARY:Let's talk about... Jordan Wine Estate's answer to climate change
DESCRIPTION:Let’s talk about… Jordan Wine Estate’s answer to climate change: Assyrtiko in Stellenbosch and cool climate chardonnay and pinot noir in Sussex\, with Gary and Kathy Jordan and Sjaak Nelson \nThe Jordan family’s wine enterprise spans two very different locations: Stellenbosch in South Africa and East Sussex in England. Gary and Kathy\, with head winemaker Sjaak\, will link the two in a presentation that will emphasise sustainability and planning for a greener future. \nFollowing an introduction to their estates\, they will pose two questions: \nWhy assyrtiko? An unexpected decision\, surely\, when they have won numerous Decanter and IWSC trophies for their chardonnay and Bordeaux blend. It will\, they say\, show how the past is shaping the estate’s future. \nWhy Sussex? Here\, they will discus challenges and opportunities in the UK from a South African perspective. \nThe now 164-hectare Stellenbosch estate has a 350-year grape-growing history. Kathy and Gary began making wine there 30 years ago\, their raw material the result of Gary’s parents implementation of a replanting programme of classic varieties chosen to best exploit the varied soils and slopes. The more recent story of assyrtiko is especially fascinating\, and a lesson in planning for the future. \nMousehall farm was first recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086. Its revival under Jordan ownership began in 2017\, with planting of botanicals as well as vines. Its first product was a dry gin. \nThe presenters will be speaking from Mousehall\, where they are preparing their first Sussex chardonnay and pinot noir for bottling. \nSee: \nX/Twitter: @Gary_Jordan | @Jordan_Wines \nFacebook: www.facebook.com/jordanwines \nInstagram: @jordan_wines | @jordanrestaurant \nOnline: www.jordanwines.com \nTo join this seminar\, please register now or at any time before 5pm BST on Tuesday 5th December. The session\, including Q&As\, will last for approximately one hour. To register\, follow the link below. Guests will be very welcome\, but please let Andrea know their names. \nRegister in advance for this webinar: https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZIld-mvqzMoE9O0Zc9FTaKOHqR1ub57qAGQ \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. \nThe Let’s talk about… presentations will start again in the New Year\, with topics including ice wine and old vines on the schedule. More information will be circulated soon. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:CWW Let's talk about... Bottle weight - the new green frontier with Jancis Robinson MW
DESCRIPTION:© Benjamin McMahon \nJancis\, widely regarded as the world’s most influential wine writer\, will be talking about why wine bottle weight matters and the current state of play on bottle weight around the world. She will highlight the goodies and the baddies\, and touch on various alternatives in wine packaging. \nSupported by her team at www.jancisrobinson.com she has long been at the forefront of campaigning for ‘greener’ bottles\, forcefully spreading the word that glass-bottle manufacture and transport is the most significant contributor to wine’s carbon emissions. Her website was a pioneer in including bottle weights in tasting notes. This seminar will provide an invaluable overview of a topic essential to all wine communicators. \nTo join this seminar\, please register now or at any time before 5pm GMT on Tuesday 9th January. The session\, including Q&As\, will last for approximately one hour. To register\, follow the link below. Guests will be very welcome\, but please let Andrea know their names. \nRegister in advance for this meeting:\nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZUodOmgqTgiGNcuAhaLp0UZbIQJiZdByK_y \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

SUMMARY:CWW Let's talk about... Why are there more old vines in Lodi than any other region in America? with Randy Caparoso
DESCRIPTION:The second of the Circle’s 2024 season of Let’s talk about… online seminars will be presented by another expert member\, Randy Caparoso. As usual\, this year the sessions will continue on Tuesdays at 5pm UK time\, normally in the first and third weeks of each month\, with advance registration. If you can’t attend the live sessions they are available to watch afterwards on the Circle’s YouTube channel (links in the members’ area of the website). \nRemarkably\, more than 16\,000 acres (6\,500 hectares) of existing Lodi vineyards were planted before the 1970s – easily the largest total in California and anywhere in the United States. \nRandy\, who has studied them extensively and in 2022 published a comprehensive book on the region\,will lead us through the history behind these plantings\, the grape varieties\, how the grapes are used in both premium wines and for the commodity market\, and explain the current Save the Old campaign aimed at stimulating industry and consumer enthusiasm for these historic vines. He will also touch on the broader reasons for appreciating old vines and the questions associated with understanding their value. \nRandy is a wine journalist and photographer who lives in Lodi\, California. He is currently editor-at-large for The SOMM Journal\, writes for the Lodi Winegrape Commission and is author of Lodi!\, The Definitive Guide and History of America’s Largest Winegrowing Region (KitchenCinco Press\, 2022). \nRegister in advance for this webinar: \nhttps://circleofwinewriters.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e69f39c21a0add50363e2abb8&id=df038f29fe&e=ae8d3bbc62 \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. \nWe look forward to seeing you then.

SUMMARY:CWW - Let's talk about... Rosé: a simple wine that’s full of mystery\, with Liz Gabay MW
DESCRIPTION:CWW – Let’s talk about… Rosé: a simple wine that’s full of mystery\, with Liz Gabay MW \nTuesday 9th April at 5pm BST \nFor years rosé has been promoted as the simple pink wine appealing to consumers who do not want to learn vintage charts\, terroir or wine making. It just is\, like Just Ken – Just rosé. \nBut what if there is more to rosé than meets the eye? \nLiz\, who is a highly respected authority on rosé wine and a Circle member\, notes that a small but growing number of producers are experimenting with different styles of  winemaking using tradition and innovation to create a range of styles. Where does pale rosé end and blanc de noir start\, or dark rosé and summer red? \nIn this session she will be looking at marketing\, market trends\, impact of climate change and what’s new behind the scenes\, answering questions and hopefully creating a good discussion. \nIf you can’t attend the live session it will be available to watch afterwards\, with its 90+ predecessors\, on the Circle’s YouTube channel (links in the members’ area of the website). \nTo join this seminar\, please register now or at any time before 5pm BST on Tuesday 9th April. SUMMARY:CWW - Let's talk about... Wine Tourism Douro and beyond with Adrian Bridge
DESCRIPTION:CWW – Let’s talk about… Porto and Douro\, a revolution in Wine Tourism and its impact on the region and its products\, with Adrian Bridge \nTuesday 7th May at 5pm BST \nPortugal is a highly fashionable tourism destination and has seen an explosion of development in Lisbon and Porto over recent years\, with much international investment. This transformation is reflected in the demand for Portuguese products\, including wine and port. \nOur speaker\, Adrian Bridge\, who leads the Fladgate Partnership\, has pioneered new styles of port as well as the wine hotel The Yeatman\, which arguably lit the fuse for Porto’s rocketing tourism success. More recent investment and the launching of World of Wine is aimed at taking the destination to another level. \nAdrian argues that the influx of visitors is having an impact not only in Portugal but also on demand for Portuguese products around the world\, not least table wines. The Fladgate Partnership has recently moved into this area and now has 250ha of table wine vineyards spread across four regions\, Minho\, Dao\, Bairrada and Douro. This is a major step for the company\, whose origins stretch back to the foundation of Taylor’s Port in 1692. \nAdrian’s talk will cover some of these trends\, the reasons for the strategic changes that he has led and\, importantly\, what he sees happening for the future.  Will this development in Portugal be a template for other regions? \nSee fladgatepartnership.com/en and and wow.pt/en \nTo join this seminar\, please register now or at any time before 5pm BST on Tuesday 7th May. The session\, including Q&As\, will last for approximately one hour. To register\, follow the link below. Guests will be very welcome\, but please let Andrea know their names. \nRegister in advance for this webinar: \nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZ0vdOyspzgvH9wS2Jq1TDMCgs9SxkXcm_pF \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. \nWe look forward to seeing you then. \nMichèle Shah & Liz Sagues\, CWW online events organisers \n  \n
