Ian Bancroft is a writer and former diplomat based in the Balkans for over fifteen years. He writes for Glug Magazine from the UK, and has also contributed to Full Pour, Wine Spectator, and other publications on a variety of topics.
Ian’s speciality is wine from the former Yugoslavia, particularly indigenous grape varieties and the evolution of its wine scene. He has travelled extensively throughout the region, engaging winemakers and wine lovers alike, and experiencing firsthand its profound transformation. A firm advocate of the region’s potential, Ian is committed to helping others discover the history, heritage, and quality of this still relatively underexplored and underappreciated place, especially those realms beyond Croatia and Slovenia.
Away from wine, Ian is the author of a novel, Luka, and two works of non-fiction, The Bosnian Straitjacket and Dragon’s teeth – tales from north Kosovo. He has worked on peacebuilding for various international organisations in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia, and Kosovo.
