2019 marks the 20th anniversary for this southern France appellation, lost in the backcountry of the Languedoc, halfway between Toulouse and Montpellier. The very stony soil and the hot, dry climate of the terroir – with barely 400 to 500 mm of rain per year – set the tone for these powerful and velvety wines. The trio syrah-grenache-mourvèdre forms the backbone (there must be a minimum of 60% of these three varieties in total). Nowadays, syrah has taken the upper hand, and represents, along with grenache and Carignan, 90% of the grape varieties grown in this cru. Forty two winemakers are included in the Cru La Livinière today in a delimited area of 2700 hectares of classified vines, of which 350 hectares are in production.
