“What attracted me to the position of viticulturalist at Elephant Hill? What is has managed to achieve in such a relatively short space of time and an uncompromising approach to quality” explains Jon Peet, who has 30 years’ worth of horticultural and agricultural roles under his belt including 13 years running his own winegrowing business in Hawke’s Bay. “And the opportunity to concentrate on what is best for each and every vine to allow it to achieve the maximum wine potential.” Blocks are split into different rows and then picked by clone.
“At Elephant Hill, my work is to respond to the need of the vine whatever that season throws at it as a good viticulturalist will be skilful enough to go with the flow in any one season and the East coast of NZ has one of the most variable climates in the grape growing world. There is nothing predictable about how each vine will respond to the vagaries of each season.
Elephant Hill was founded in 2003, and its first vintage was only released in 2007. The Elephant Hill Estate Syrah 2009 then went on to scoop the Trophy for the Best Red Rhône Varietal over £10 at the 2011 Decanter World Wine Awards.
